Where to sleep,
one stage at a time.
Halta splits a cycling or walking route into achievable daily stages, then shows where to sleep around each one — with hosts, campsites, mountain huts and bivouac spots. 30 196 places mapped across France, 74 routes ready to ride. Free, launching in the first quarter of 2027.

Your route, stage by stage
Import a GPX file or pick one of the 74 prepared routes. Halta cuts it into days you can actually ride, with the distance and elevation of each — then you stretch a stage, cut another short, push one back a day, and the places to sleep follow.
The detour is measured to the track itself, segment by segment, not as a straight line from the nearest town. That is the difference between “2 km away” and “2 km away, on the other side of the valley”. Across 74 routes, 15 801 places to sleep fall within 5 km of a track.
Four ways to sleep, on one map
| Type | Mapped | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| With hosts | At launch | Travellers who welcome others into their homes, usually for free. You write ahead; you do not book a slot. |
| Campsites | 22 519 | From municipal sites to private grounds. 2 036 of them free. |
| Mountain huts | 2 430 | Staffed and unstaffed, mostly in the Alps and Pyrenees. |
| Bivouac spots | 5 247 | Shelters, unstaffed cabins and tolerated pitches. All free. |
7 310 of these places are free, and the median paid night costs 12 €. Where those figures come from, and what they do not cover, is set out on the method page.

Frequently asked questions
What is Halta?
Halta is a free French app that splits a cycling or walking route into achievable daily stages, then shows where to sleep around each one: with hosts, campsites, mountain huts and bivouac spots. It launches in the first quarter of 2027.
Is Halta free?
Yes. Planning a trip, browsing the map of places to sleep and contacting a host are all free. Hospitality between travellers happens directly between people: Halta takes no commission on it.
Does Halta cover countries other than France?
Not yet. The inventory of 33 086 places is centred on France and spills only into its immediate margins. Routes that leave that area say so on their page and show no count at all.
Can you import your own GPX file?
Yes. Import a GPX and Halta splits it into achievable stages, with the distance and elevation of each. You can also start from one of the 74 prepared routes and adjust it.
Where does Halta’s data come from?
From three open sources: refuges.info, DATAtourisme and OpenStreetMap. 33 086 places, refreshed monthly, published under the ODbL licence. The method and its limits are on the method page.
How is Halta different from a route planner?
A route planner answers “which way do I go”. Halta answers “where do I stop tonight”: it measures each place’s real detour to the track, and shows four types of accommodation on one map.
