Sleeping on the road

Where to sleep on a cycle tour.

There are four ways to sleep on a cycle tour in France: the campsite, the bivouac, the mountain hut and staying with a host. Of the 30 196 places Halta lists across the country, 7 310 are free. The median price of a paid night is 12 euros.

The four ways, compared

Price is not what decides it. What decides it is what exists where the day actually ends — and that varies enormously by type.

The four types of accommodation for long-distance travel, compared.
TypeListed in FrancePriceWhat to know
Campsite22 5192 036 free, median 12 €By far the densest option everywhere in France. Showers almost always, and often a cheaper small-tent pitch.
Bivouac spot5 247FreeShelters, unstaffed cabins, tolerated pitches. No guarantee of a place: they cannot be booked.
Mountain hut2 430From free (unstaffed) to half boardMostly in the mountains. Booking is effectively compulsory on staffed huts in summer.
With a hostNot in the inventoryUsually freeTravellers who welcome others into their homes. You write ahead; you do not book a slot.

Hosts appear in none of the figures above: private individuals are not mapped in open data. They are found through dedicated networks — see hospitality networks for cyclists.

What is actually free

7 310 of the 33 086 places list a price of “free”, or 22 % of the inventory. The split is very uneven.

  • 5 247 bivouac spots — all of them: shelters, unstaffed cabins and tolerated pitches are never charged for.
  • 2 036 campsites — municipal sites left open, aires naturelles, village fields out of season.
  • Only 27 mountain huts: the overwhelming majority charge, even when unstaffed.

Across the 1 465 places whose rate is stated in usable euros, the median night costs 12 €, with half of all rates falling between 8 and 15 €. The rest say “variable”: most French campsites do not publish a single price, because it depends on the season and the number of people.

What you actually find there

A loaded cyclist is not looking for the same comfort as a holidaymaker. Here is what the inventory declares, across all types.

Facilities declared in the inventory, across all accommodation types.
FacilityPlacesWhy it matters
Shower10 948The first thing you want after 90 km. Almost always present on campsites.
Covered shelter7 381Decisive in rain: it is what separates a cabin from an open bivouac pitch.
Water point1 780The only genuinely essential facility when bivouacking.
Meals on site1 158Saves carrying a stove and food over a mountain stage.
Bike tools or workshop1 124Rare, and often a sign of an establishment holding the Accueil Vélo label.
Wi-Fi1 931For planning tomorrow’s stage and messaging a host.

17 286 places carry a phone number and 23 902 a website. That is what lets you call before making the detour, rather than arriving at a locked gate.

How to choose, in practice

The useful question is not “which type do I prefer” but “what is within reach of where I will be tonight”. That is exactly the calculation Halta performs.

  • The detour matters more than the straight-line distance. A campsite 3 km away behind a hill costs 20 minutes and 150 m of climbing at the end of a day.
  • In the mountains, huts must be booked. Arriving unbooked at a staffed hut in July or August usually means leaving again.
  • A bivouac is not planned, it is spotted. Always keep a fallback within 10 km.
  • With hosts, write the day before at the very latest. Nobody appreciates a 7 pm message for the same night.

Across the 74 routes Halta has split into stages, 15 801 places to sleep lie within 5 km of a track. The breakdown, route by route, is on the routes page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a night cost on a cycle tour in France?

Across the 1 465 places in Halta’s inventory with a rate stated in euros, the median night costs 12 euros, with half of all rates between 8 and 15 euros. 7 310 places are free.

Can you cycle tour France sleeping for free?

Yes. 7 310 free places are listed across France: 5 247 bivouac spots, 2 036 campsites and 27 mountain huts. Hospitality between cyclists, free by principle, comes on top of that.

Do you need to book accommodation on a cycle tour?

It depends on the type. Staffed mountain huts must be booked, especially in July and August. Campsites will almost always take a small tent unbooked. Bivouac spots cannot be booked at all. With hosts, write at least the day before.

What is the difference between a bivouac and wild camping in France?

A bivouac is a single-night stop, shelter pitched in the evening and struck at dawn, leaving no trace. Wild camping is a lasting set-up over several days with kit deployed. The first is often tolerated, the second rarely.

How many places to sleep line France’s cycle routes?

Halta lists 15 801 places within 5 km of the tracks of the 74 routes it has split into stages — 33 204 kilometres of cycle routes, EuroVelo ways, GR trails and Camino ways.
